An entrepreneur at heart with three successful businesses, 68-year-old local resident Gary Langstaff had bone-on-bone pain in both his knees and ankles.
“You could hear me click,” says Langstaff. “I sounded like a skeleton. I couldn’t walk without having to sit down at some point and take the pressure off my ankles.”
His primary care doctor sent him to BoulderCentre for Orthopedics specifically to work with foot and ankle specialist Robert H. Leland, MD, Boulder’s first fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle specialist and one of the most experienced foot and ankle surgeons in the Rocky Mountain Region.
“I wanted to be able to walk again without having any pain, and Dr. Leland said he could do that,” says Langstaff.
After his initial consult, he learned that joint replacements would be needed for both his knees and ankles, but he chose to start with his right ankle first, having the procedure performed by Dr. Leland in January 2017.
His recovery went well, spending the first two weeks putting no weight on the foot and the following six weeks in a fracture boot slowly increasing the pressure he put on his foot.
“He did really well. By three months, he was pretty well-functional with very little limitation,” says Dr. Leland.
Langstaff went on to have his left ankle replaced as well as one of his knees, and he is looking to schedule his other knee replacement soon.
“It’s completely a night-and-day difference,” says Langstaff, who is walking pain-free again.
