My Comeback Story: Burt R.

Burt R.
The New Hip

After knowing for about 10 years that I would need a new hip, the telltale sign was that the pain would become unbearable, which it finally did. Dr. Austin Chen was recommended by another friend who had the same procedure. By the time of my first appointment, I was taking over 20 pills a day for pain (ibuprofen and acetaminophen) - but Dr. Chen put an end to that. Although my procedure had to be rescheduled, ultimately it happened weeks before my initial appointment because of the level of pain I was in. It all went well. I followed the post-procedure protocols to a T, meaning the exercises I should do, using a walker for a few days, pressure socks, etc. In a few weeks, I was back at my part-time job at the Carousel of Happiness in Nederland. A few weeks later, I'd begun my daily routine of what had been a 3-mile walk, starting at just 1/4 mile, then slowly increasing it by the week. I also resumed playing with my band, which had also become a grueling session of pain as opposed to a beautiful session of music. Now it's as if I never had any procedure done. Pain: gone. Ability to resume all previous activities: 100%. Complications: none. I'm also a writer and wrote a poem called "The New Hip" (published in my Metapsychosis journal last summer), which proved that I could resume my creative life as well. I'm grateful for the BoulderCentre for Orthopedics & Spine, for their professionalism, courtesy, and ability to make me feel comfortable at every stage of the whole process, and I'd recommend them to anyone.
